English Weightlifters Deliver Strong Performances in Malta

English athletes took to the platform in Malta last weekend at the 46th European Small Nations and Malta International Open Championships, hosted at the newly opened Weightlifting Centre in Marsa.

English Weightlifters Deliver Strong Performances in Malta

With over 150 competitors from 15 countries, the event was one of the largest international competitions ever held on the island.

The English team featured a mix of experienced lifters and rising talents, many of whom produced solid totals and clean lifts under pressure.

Women’s Highlights

Heather Curtis completed a 94kg snatch and added 110kg in the clean and jerk after a steady series of lifts.

Georgia Radley kept her composure after two failed snatches at 90kg, securing the lift on her final attempt. She finished with a clean and jerk of 114kg.

Funmi Morgan posted 95kg in the snatch and opened confidently with 110kg in the clean and jerk, finishing with a 205kg total.

Deborah Alawode made her second snatch at 91kg and followed up with 119kg in the clean and jerk—just missing 123kg on her final attempt.

Erin Friel snatched 89kg and went on to hit 112kg in the clean and jerk, completing a strong series after an early miss.

Rachel Bemrose went three-for-three in the clean and jerk, ending on 114kg after making 87kg in the snatch.

Men’s Highlights

Andrew Griffiths returned to international competition with a best snatch of 153kg and a strong 181kg clean and jerk, ending with a 334kg total.

Jonathan Chin was one of the most consistent lifters of the event, completing all six attempts. He finished with 125kg in the snatch and 164kg in the clean and jerk, totalling 289kg.

Jaswant Shergill recovered after two missed snatch attempts to post 114kg on his third lift  and followed up with 145kg in the clean and jerk.

Edward Smale built momentum through the day, ending with 136kg in the snatch and 170kg in the clean and jerk—making all three of his attempts in the latter.

Steve Bestman managed to recover after missing his first two snatches, finishing with 140kg and adding a best clean and jerk of 174kg.

Angus Doig opened with a solid 130kg snatch and posted 165kg in the clean and jerk, narrowly missing 168kg on his final lift.
