Coach Development

What is coach development?

Passing your driving test and becoming a Formula 1 driver are two very different things. A similar distinction exists in coaching: being “good enough” is not the same as being the best. Developing into the best cannot be achieved or mandated by tests or qualifications alone.

With this in mind, the Coach Development Team at British Weight Lifting exists to support coaches in their growth, creating opportunities for them to take ownership of their learning and to connect with others in a collaborative way.

Who does Coach Development serve?

Coaches employed within BWL’s World Class Programme

Coaches involved in BWL initiatives, such as Talent Academies

Any BWL coach who wishes to engage with events or opportunities provided by the Coach Development Team

What are our aims?

Support coaches and staff within BWL to develop their practice in response to needs that arise from their own experiences.

Facilitate the development of expertise through long-term investment in coaching and the sport.

Highlight and share innovative and creative practices from coaches where they may be of value to others.

Provide opportunities for all coaches to opt in to learning experiences, such as cross-club collaborative events, that drive growth and development within BWL.

How can I access these opportunities?

For events and knowledge-sharing open to all coaches, please complete the sign-up form to receive updates from the Coach Development Team.  So far, we have delivered two successful online coach development programmes, as well as the well-received Stronger Together conference series. By signing up for updates, you’ll be the first to hear about future opportunities. Those who register for updates will also receive a free printable PDF copy of the BWL Coach Development Handbook.  Click Here

Opportunities to look forward to in 2026

Two projects are currently in the planning stages:

  • Project One: Attendance will be limited, but the outputs will be shared publicly.
  • Project Two: This will be accessible online and open to all BWL coaches once trial runs are complete. Preference will be given to coaches active within BWL clubs. Numbers will be capped to ensure small-group learning environments.

Further details will be released in the coming weeks, with those who are signed up for Coach Development updates receiving information first.
