The 2023 BUCS Weightlifting and Para Powerlifting Championships will be held between 21-23 April at Bangor University.

Virtual qualification

In response to feedback, British Weight Lifting has opened a virtual competition for those trying to qualify for the BUCs event.

The virtual qualifier opens at 09:00 on Wednesday 8 March 2023, and will close for entries at 21:00 on Sunday 19 March 2023.

Please note: Lifters will be notified on Monday 20 March, this provides 1 day for students to enter BUCS 

Entries will cost £15.00. 

To enter you will need to film yourself making up to three attempts at the snatch and clean & jerk and upload them to the competition webpage. See videos below on how to ensure your uploads meet the requirements. 

BWL ask that lifters refrain from recording their entry with background music which features explicit or abusive language. Please be aware that this could result in a no-lift.

Anyone wanting to compete at BUCS must meet the British qualification standards which can be found here.

The qualification window for the competition is between 20 March 2022 – 21 March 2023.

BUCS will follow the BWL weightlifting Technical & Competition Rules and Regulations (TCRRs) and para powerlifting Technical & Competition Rules and Regulations (TCRRs) with the exception that individuals are not required to have domiciled status in the UK or be in possession of, or eligible to apply for, a British passport.

Entries open on 14 February and close on 21 March for Students/Competitors.

The deadline for Institution Administrator Approval is 23 March 2023.

To apply for the competition all eligible competitors must follow these steps.

  1. Competitor registers for a membership on the British Weight Lifting website and records their membership number. 
  2. Competitor to complete competition application on BUCS Play inputting their BWL membership number.
  3. Institution administrator approves entry.
  4. British Weight Lifting reviews membership status for each athlete.
  5. BUCS approves /denies entry into the competition and publishes confirmed entry list.

Categorised as a BWL Tier 1 event the results from the competition will be added to the BWL rankings and can be used for qualification to future national events. This event can also be used to set BWL British records.

  • You need to be a current member of British Weight Lifting. Become a member here
  • Institutions can request an unlimited number of entries
  • Entries must be made through BUCS Play via the BUCS website
  • Entries cost £35 per competitor
  • Ensure your institution administrator can approve your entry
  • You can find the rules and regulations of the competition in the weightlifting TCRRs and Para Powerlifting TCRRs
  • By competing in the BUCS Weightlifting and Para Powerlifting Championships you will be eligible for BUCS points if you secure a first, second, third or fourth place. For more information please click here

 *Please note that a concession is 65+ or someone aged between 11 - 16 years of age.  Photographic ID to prove age may be required. Anyone aged 10 and under can enter the competition free of charge with an accompanying adult.
