Olympic weightlifting and Para powerlifting joined the BUCS family of sports in 2020 following a successful application in 2019. The previous British University & College Weightlifting Championships will now be known as the BUCS Weightlifting and Para Powerlifting Championships.

Olympic weightlifting and Para powerlifting joined the BUCS family of sports in 2020 following a successful application in 2019. The previous British University & College Weightlifting Championships will now be known as the BUCS Weightlifting and Para Powerlifting Championships.

The first ever British University & College Championships for Weightlifting & Para lifting took take place virtually between 21 – 28 April 2021.

The inaugural edition of the BUCS Weightlifting and Para Powerlifting Championship took place online between 21 - 28 Apr 2021 and featured 70 student athletes representing 31 educational institutions from across the county.

Entries open on Tuesday 16 March 2021 and close on Tuesday 6 April 2021 at 11:59 for Students/Competitors.

The deadline for Institution Administrator Approval is Tuesday 8 April 2021 at 11:59pm

To apply for the competition all eligible competitors must follow these steps.

  1. Competitor registers for a membership on the British Weight Lifting website and records their membership number. 
  2. Competitor to complete competition application on BUCS Play inputting their BWL membership number.
  3. Institution administrator approves entry.
  4. British Weightlifting reviews membership status for each athlete.
  5. BUCS approves /denies entry into the competition and publishes confirmed entry list.

What you need to know

  • You need to be a current member of British Weight Lifting. Become a member here.
  • Institutions can request an unlimited number of entries.
  • Entries must be made through BUCS Play via the BUCS website
  • Entries cost £15.00 per competitor.
  • Ensure you apply to take part in the competition between 16 March – 6 April 2021 to ensure your institution administrator can approve your entry.
  • Competition entries must be timestamped between midday on Wednesday 21 April – Wednesday 28 April.
  • To enter you will need to film yourself making three attempts at the snatch and clean & jerk and upload them to the competition webpage. We encourage lifters to ensure they use all three attempts to avoid missing out on a total due to a ‘no-lift’ for a single upload.
  • BWL ask that lifters refrain from recording their entry with background music which features explicit or abusive language. Please be aware that this could result in a no-lift.
  • To make this competition more accessible you do not need to wear a singlet to compete, you can simply wear a close-fitting T-shirt and shorts. Your elbows and knees must be visible and clear to see if they are fully extended.
  • You can find the rules and regulations of the competition in the TCRRs and Virtual TCRRs. 

Key dates

  • BUCS Play entries will open on Tuesday 16 March
  • BUCS Play entries will close for competitors at 11.59pm on Tuesday 6 April
  • Deadline for Institution Administrator Approval is 11.59pm Thursday 8 April
  • Video uploads will begin on Wednesday 21 April at 1200 midday
  • Video uploads will end on Wednesday 28 April at 1200 midday
  • Results will be published on Wednesday 05 May
