Notice of 2025 BWL Annual General Meeting
British Weight Lifting (BWL) has published its Annual Report and Audited Accounts for 2024–25 in advance of the organisation’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) on 11 December 2025 at 1900hrs. Although the AGM falls slightly outside the 7-month window set out in the BWL articles, the Board confirmed that the delay was unavoidable due to final-stage scrutiny by independent auditors.

The 2024–25 period was highlighted by outstanding performances at the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games, where British lifters secured four medals, equalling the nation’s best-ever Olympic and Paralympic return. Across all international competitions, BWL athletes achieved a total of 28 medals, reflecting the strength of the performance pathways and world-class coaching support now in place.
Membership and competition participation continued to grow, with 3,775 members, 147 affiliated clubs, and a record 6,569 competition entries. The organisation also made significant progress in inclusion and education through new coaching scholarships and the launch of the UK’s first adaptive lifting competition, broadening access to the sport across communities.
The audited financial statements confirm a strong year of financial management, with total income of £2,767,393, total expenditure of £2,712,842, and an operating surplus of £58,353, increasing reserves to £358,966. Income was driven primarily by grant funding, course delivery, and membership services, underlining the stability of BWL’s financial position.
BWL maintained full compliance with the UK Code for Sports Governance, with UK Sport reaffirming its approval in December 2024. The appointment of Rupinder Ashworth as Independent Chair marked an historic milestone as the organisation’s first female Chair, strengthening diversity and leadership at the highest level.
With record investment of £5.6 million from UK Sport for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic and Paralympic cycle and an additional £1 million from Sport England, BWL enters the next strategic cycle with optimism and ambition. Priorities for 2026–2030 include expanding coach education and participation pathways, diversifying commercial income, hosting major international events, and building sustainable athlete and coach pipelines.
BWL CEO Matthew Curtain said, ‘This year has brought both challenges and achievements, but the dedication and passion of our lifters, coaches, and volunteers continue to inspire us all. With record investment, strong governance, and medal-winning performances, we are building a stronger, more sustainable future.’
