From first-time competitors to experienced coaches and technical officials, a well-run competition can leave a lasting impression.
Here's our guide to hosting a successful Tier 3 competition. You can download our full club guide here.
Why host a Tier 3 competition?
A Tier 3 competition offers far more than a day of lifting.
It can help you:
- Give athletes valuable competition experience and official totals.
- Provide qualification opportunities for Tier 1 and Tier 2 events.
- Generate income through entry fees.
- Develop coaches, volunteers and technical officials.
- Raise the profile of your club within the local community.
For many clubs, a Tier 3 event becomes a regular fixture in the calendar and an important part of member recruitment and retention.
Start with a clear plan
Before opening entries, decide exactly what you want your competition to achieve.
Ask yourself:
- Which age groups is the competition for?
- How many athletes can your venue comfortably support?
- What entry fee will you charge?
If you're hosting a competition for the first time, keep things simple. A single-platform event with a manageable number of athletes is often the best place to start.
Register your event early
All Tier 3 competitions must be registered through Sport:80.
Before setting up your competition, you'll need a Stripe account to manage entry payments and refunds.
When registering your event, make sure you:
- Create the competition through your club account.
- Set a realistic entry deadline.
- Allocate key personnel, including:
- Event Organiser
- Safeguarding Officer
- Anti-Doping Liaison
At smaller events, these roles can be carried out by the same person. As competitions grow, it's often helpful to share responsibilities across a wider team.
Choose the right venue
A great competition experience starts with the right environment.
Competition area
Your venue should include:
- An 8m x 8m field of play.
- A 3m x 3m competition platform.
- Appropriate seating for technical officials and spectators.
- Access to power for scoring and display systems.
Warm-up area
The warm-up room is one of the busiest parts of any competition.
Make sure there's:
- Enough floor space for athletes and coaches.
- Approximately one warm-up platform for every four athletes in your largest session.
- Sufficient bars, plates and collars available throughout the day.
Additional facilities
You'll also need:
- A dedicated weigh-in room.
- Suitable changing facilities.
- Space for anti-doping procedures if required.
Get your equipment competition-ready
Reliable equipment helps competitions run smoothly and gives athletes confidence on the platform.
Your event should have:
- Competition bars.
- Sufficient weight plates.
- Competition collars.
- Chalk.
- Bar cleaning equipment.
- Timing and scoring systems – we recommend the OWL system - download here
Creating an equipment checklist several weeks before competition day can help identify any gaps.
It's also worth having backup systems available wherever possible. A manual timing system or referee signalling process can be invaluable if technical issues arise.
Build a strong team
Successful competitions rely on great people.
For a single-platform Tier 3 competition, you'll need either:
- One Level 3 Technical Official acting as referee, or
- Three Level 2 Technical Officials serving as referees.
Additional technical officials may be required for responsibilities such as:
- Weigh-ins
- Timekeeping
- Speaker duties
All officials must hold a valid British Weight Lifting licence.
You'll also need volunteers to support areas such as:
- Platform loading
- Marshalling
- Athlete registration
- Event set-up and pack-down
When recruiting volunteers, it's always better to have too many than too few. A larger team gives people the opportunity to rotate roles and enjoy the day.
Put athletes first
The best competitions are remembered for how they make people feel.
Small details can make a big difference, including:
- Clear communication before the event.
- A published timetable.
- Start lists shared in advance.
- Efficient weigh-ins.
- Friendly volunteers.
- Clear announcements throughout the day.
For some participants, a Tier 3 competition may be their first experience of the sport. Creating a welcoming and supportive environment can encourage them to stay involved for years to come.
Deliver a smooth competition day
Preparation pays off when competition day arrives.
Before lifting begins, make sure you:
- Verify athlete ID and dates of birth during weigh-in.
- Confirm all technical officials hold current licences.
- Ensure only appropriately licensed coaches access warm-up areas.
Many clubs also choose to livestream their events, helping family members, supporters and the wider weightlifting community follow the action.
Submit your results
The competition doesn't end when the final lift is completed.
After the event, remember to:
- Save competition protocols and scoring records.
- Complete the official results template.
- Upload results through Sport:80.
Submitting accurate results is essential. It ensures athletes receive recognised totals and any ranking or qualification opportunities linked to the competition.
Creating a competition athletes will remember
A successful Tier 3 competition isn't about having the biggest venue or the most expensive equipment.
It's about creating a safe, professional and enjoyable experience for athletes, coaches, officials and spectators.
Start simple. Plan ahead. Communicate clearly. Trust your team.
Get those fundamentals right and your competition can become a valuable part of your club calendar, helping more people experience weightlifting, achieve their goals and find their strong.
