In Memoriam: John McNiven MBE 1935 – 2024

We mourn the passing of John McNiven MBE, whose impact on the weightlifting community was both profound and far-reaching.

John McNiven competed for Scotland at six Commonwealth Games in the 56kg category. He made his debut in 1966 in Kingston and won bronze medals in the 1970 and 1974 Games in Edinburgh and Christchurch.

McNiven dominated the national scene, winning twenty-five Scottish Championships. He also excelled on the global stage, competing in 18 World Masters events and winning gold in 14 of them. In 1993, he was the first weightlifter to receive the World Masters Hall of Fame Award.

His contribution to weightlifting was recognised with an MBE in 1994 for services to the sport, and his induction into the Scottish Sports Hall of Fame in 2003. He remained active in the sport, often serving as a technical official at British Championships.

John played a crucial role in organising the 1999 World Masters Championships in Glasgow, which drew over 450 competitors. He continued his involvement in the sport well into his 70s, officiating at the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games.

John McNiven MBE's legacy in weightlifting is marked by his impressive achievements and his ongoing commitment to the sport.
