Building on 138 funded places awarded to candidates in 2025, the BWL Foundation’s investment into community weightlifting is significant. This year’s cohort includes candidates from 28 BWL affiliated clubs and 2 community organisations, underscoring the Foundation’s commitment to supporting both established and grassroots initiatives. By fostering these connections, the programme highlights the benefits of being part of the BWL network, providing access to education, resources, and pathways that help aspiring coaches thrive.

This year’s cohort reflects the variety of people in the weightlifting community, bringing together athletes, students, educators and professionals who are committed to progressing both their own development and the sport as a whole.

A common theme among successful applicants was the transformative impact of weightlifting on their lives and their desire to give back.

“Weightlifting has genuinely changed my life — and now I want to offer that same opportunity to others.”

Recipients highlighted the importance of coaching in creating positive, supportive environments that enable individuals to thrive both physically and mentally.

“Coaching is where I can make the biggest difference — by creating environments where people feel supported to succeed.”

The scholarship will support learners in achieving a British Weight Lifting coaching qualification, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to coach effectively across a variety of settings.

Many applicants are already making a meaningful contribution within their communities, including supporting university programmes, delivering sessions for young people, and working in areas with limited access to qualified coaching.

“I’m passionate about making weightlifting more accessible, especially for young people who might not otherwise have the opportunity.”

Widening participation remains a key priority, with several recipients focused on increasing opportunities for women and underrepresented groups within the sport.

“I want to encourage more women to step into strength training and feel they belong there.”

The programme also addresses the ongoing need to strengthen the coaching workforce, particularly at grassroots level.

“There is a real need for more qualified coaches to support the next generation of lifters.”

By investing in coach education, the BWL Foundation continues to support the long-term growth and sustainability of the sport, ensuring that athletes across the country have access to high-quality coaching and development pathways.

“This coaching course is the next natural step in my journey, allowing me to give back to the sport and community that shaped me.”

The BWL Foundation congratulates all successful applicants and looks forward to hearing more about their journey as they progress through the qualification and contribute to the future of the sport.
