Raise the Bar - Free 6 week introductory strength training courses for schools and sports clubs

In October 2021 British Weight Lifting will be launching a project to deliver free 6 week introductory strength training courses for schools and local sports clubs across the UK.

Raise the Bar - Free 6 week introductory strength training courses for schools and sports clubs

The project is designed for young people between the ages of 12 - 17 and will give participants the opportunity to learn the skills they need to safely perform a range of basic resistance training exercises and better understand the benefits that strength and a healthy lifestyle can have on their long-term physical and mental health.

Sport England and the NHS believe that strength training exercises should be a key part of people’s weekly exercise plan to help them strengthen muscles and bones.

As the National Governing Body for weightlifting in Great Britain, British Weight Lifting want to make sure that young people have opportunities to learn from skilled coaches in safe and inclusive environments.

The Raise the Bar project will be delivered by British Weight Lifting's ten talent academies across England.

  • Atlas WL (Alfreton, Derbyshire)
  • Colchester WL (Colchester, Essex)
  • Europa (Dartford, Kent)
  • Galleon WL (Truro, Cornwall)
  • Lakeside WL (Eastleigh, Hampshire)
  • North Tyneside Barbells (Howdon, Newcastle upon Tyne)
  • Oxford Power Sports (Oxford, Oxfordshire)
  • Pride Performance (Warrington, Cheshire)
  • Sheffield Hallam (Sheffield, South Yorkshire)
  • Wild Boar Weightlifting (Lydney, Gloucestershire)

At the end of the programme there will be opportunities for participants interested to continue the sport of Olympic Weightlifting at these clubs, to further develop their skills and find out if they have what it takes to be a Commonwealth or Olympic champion of the future.
