Clubs in the South of England continue to test out the new inter-club team format: The Club Cup
On 20 July, Lakeside Weightlifting hosted Guildford Weightlifting, Hampshire Barbell, Kingdom Barbell, Legion Barbell, and Crazy Strength for an emerging team event.

The competition took place in the gazebo under the sun and rain, with good and friendly vibes for new and experienced lifters alike. We extend our appreciation to all the lifters who took part, and a special thanks to Lizzie and Rhys for expertly hosting and scoring this round.
The purpose of the event is to give a wider range of lifters a positive experience of weightlifting competition through a team approach. As a Tier 4 event, participants aren't required to be members of British Weight Lifting. The day was sociable, fun, and competitive, and provided a sense of community within and between clubs.
What Format was Used?
- Clubs fielded a team of 6 lifters (3 male and 3 female). However, where a club struggled for numbers, they fielded a smaller team.
- Only one male and one female lifter who met the most recent British national qualification total, could enter.
- Athletes were grouped and sessions for Snatch and Clean & Jerk took place, with one referee.
- Each individual total was converted to Q points.
- The top 2 male and top 2 female totals from each club were combined to provide an overall Q score for their club.
- Q points are obtained by multiplying the lifter's Snatch and Clean & Jerk total by a coefficient, which is based on gender and body weight. Meltzer-Faber coefficients (for men) or Huebner-Meltzer-Faber (for women) are used in combination with Q scores to produce age-adjusted Q points.
- The club used the Olympic Weightlifting competition management system for scoring, and a standardised spreadsheet developed by Rhys to quickly convert the results into overall standings.
The Result
They day belonged to Crazy Strength!
The club came away with the highest Q score and picked up first place, and most importantly got some new lifters on the platform. Well done!
The clubs have decided there will be three rounds in total, with the team with the highest league points being declared the overall winner. The next round takes place at Guildford in August.
Watch out for further opportunities to be involved in 2025/26!
