The British Weight Lifting Annual Achievement Awards aim to recognise the outstanding contributions and efforts from the weightlifting and para powerlifting community.

With more athletes and volunteers now active than ever before, these awards are vital in recognising the contributions of our members and clubs.

Thank you to everyone who took the time to nominate for British Weight Lifting’s (BWL) Annual Achievement Awards 2022. We were delighted with the number of nominations received.

The awards are designed to recognise and celebrate the achievements of the most inspirational people within the weightlifting and para powerlifting community. From outstanding athletes proudly taking medals on the world stage, to the passionate clubs, coaches and volunteers, our awards are dedicated to those who deliver excellence in our sport.

The BWL selection panel has met and selected a short list per category from the nominations received. 

Below you will find details of the award categories, information on the people shortlisted and a link for you to vote for a winner per category. Voting closes on Sunday 26 March 2023 at 11:59pm.

 

Here are the coaches shortlisted for Coach of the Year along with a summary of why people have nominated them:

Benedict Millson – Benedict is an amazing weightlifting coach who not only helps his athletes achieve their goals but also creates a supportive and welcoming community. He is a great mentor who inspires and motivates his athletes to be their best, both in weightlifting and in life.

Joe Cowen - Joe is an exceptional weightlifting coach who is dedicated to helping his clients reach their goals and create a welcoming community. He has created his own weightlifting gym and offers personalized programming and coaching to his clients. Joe is also compassionate and inclusive, making sure that everyone feels comfortable and safe in his gym, including those with neurodivergent disabilities. He has helped many lifters achieve their goals and has even inspired some to become coaches themselves.

Matt Vine - Matt is an incredibly dedicated and skilled coach who has had a significant impact on the lives of many young athletes. His commitment to teaching and developing the next generation of weightlifters is truly inspiring, and it is clear that he is highly respected and appreciated by those who have worked with him and that he goes above and beyond to create a positive and supportive environment for young athletes to thrive in.

Mehmed Fikretov - Mehmed has made a significant impact on the British Weight Lifting community through his coaching. His dedication and passion for the sport are evident, as he strives to help all athletes, regardless of their level of experience, to improve and achieve their goals. The positive community that he has built around him is also commendable, as it provides a supportive and non-judgmental space for people to pursue their passion for Olympic weightlifting. His ability to tailor his coaching approach to the individual needs of each athlete and his attention to detail are also noteworthy.

Nia Roberts - Nia has a genuine passion for helping young people achieve their goals and improve their physical and mental health through weightlifting. She has managed to grow her club to over 50 members and produce multiple Welsh and British medalists. Her dedication to creating an inclusive and supportive environment for all ages is commendable, as is her initiative to set up a charity to provide weightlifting shoes to those who can't afford them. Nia is not only a skilled coach but also a caring and compassionate person who has made a positive impact on the lives of many young people.

Zoe Chandler - Zoe is an outstanding role model, coach, and community leader. Her dedication to promoting a healthy and balanced lifestyle among children and adults is inspiring, and her commitment to creating a positive and safe learning environment for all her students is commendable. It's clear that Zoe goes above and beyond for the children and adults in her club, working hard to ensure that they have a safe space to lift and talk about any problems they may be facing. Her inclusivity and understanding of children with disabilities is also noteworthy, and she makes an effort to make them feel included. It's clear that she has a positive impact on everyone she coaches and interacts with.

Here are the clubs shortlisted for Club of the Year along with a summary of why people have nominated them:

Diamond Weightlifting Club - Diamond Weightlifting is a weightlifting club based in Llandudno, North Wales. It was established in 2019 and offers weightlifting classes for children of all backgrounds, aged 6-18. The club has a diverse membership with different languages, religions, and cultures coming together to form one club. The club offers high-quality equipment and has excellent coaches who are passionate about weightlifting and progression with the children. Diamond Weightlifting also hosts paid sessions for local children who are involved in young careers, have lower income parents, or are at risk of causing anti-social behaviour. The club offers all-female classes, which have been incredibly popular and has massively increased the number of young girls who participate in sports from the local area. The club has gone from strength to strength over the past 24 months, and it now has over 60 competitive athletes, with many of the under-17 and under-15 lifters adding over 50kg to their totals from structured programs and monitoring by Coach Nia.

Psych Weightlifting Club - Psych Weightlifting, which opened in August 2022, has quickly become a vibrant and supportive community for weightlifters of all levels in the local area. The gym offers a range of programs and equipment to suit individual needs, including a successful "Learn to Lift" course that has attracted beginners and experienced lifters alike. The supportive team at Psych Weightlifting has helped many members achieve personal bests and compete successfully in both in-house and external competitions. In addition to promoting weightlifting in the local area, the gym also aims to help younger children learn about weightlifting and gym safety. The positive and welcoming atmosphere at Psych Weightlifting is a big part of its success, and many members consider it a second home.

Resilience Weightlifting - Resilience Weightlifting is an exceptional weightlifting club that fosters a strong sense of community and inclusivity. The club's supportive head coach, Amy, takes a holistic approach to coaching and adapts training to meet the individual needs of each athlete. Resilience Weightlifting offers a range of sessions and programs for lifters of all ages and abilities, from beginner to elite. Members are encouraged to compete, and the club provides excellent support for athletes competing in local and national competitions. Resilience Weightlifting is making a positive impact in the South West and is passionate about growing the sport. The club's welcoming and supportive environment is helping to inspire new lifters and build a community of passionate weightlifters.

Here are the people shortlisted for the Inspiring Others award along with a summary of why people have nominated them:

Benedict Millson - It's inspiring to hear about Benedict's achievements despite the challenges he faces with Erbs Palsy and mental health issues. His determination and resilience are a testament to his character and his dedication to the sport of weightlifting. It's remarkable that he has become a champion and a coach, and that he continues to push himself to new heights despite the obstacles he faces. His willingness to be open about his struggles with mental health is also incredibly admirable, as it helps to break down the stigma around these issues and encourages others to seek help and support. Benedict's story is a reminder that with hard work, perseverance, and a positive attitude, we can overcome even the most daunting obstacles and achieve great things.

Emily Campbell - Emily is an incredible athlete who serves as an inspiration to many. Her positivity, encouragement, and ability to make others feel special are all fantastic qualities that undoubtedly make her a valuable role model both on and off the weightlifting platform. It's especially noteworthy that Emily is using her platform to promote important issues like body image, women in sport, and ethnicity. By using her influence in this way, she's helping to create positive change and inspire others to do the same.

Liam McGarry - It's inspirational to see how Liam has and found passion in para powerlifting since starting the sport. It's equally inspiring to hear of and see his ability to bounce back from adversity. He has been plagued with challenges and setbacks outside of his control. Over 5 operations in the last year alone and yet he returns and performs time and again with great energy and showmanship. His Commonwealth performance was one of determination last year and he's going through the same process again after setbacks this last Christmas - no doubt he will be back again at the Worlds later this year lighting up the stage. It's admirable that he has been giving back through the sport to his community by sharing this journey and story with others to show what can be done no matter what. People like Liam are great examples of resilience and determination, and they can serve as an inspiration to many others who may be facing similar challenges.

Lou Sugden - It's truly inspiring to see someone like Lou who has found a passion and excelled in it, despite facing new challenges along the way of late. Injury has made the last year difficult, and some would have given up. Her dedication and determination are admirable, and it's no surprise that she is inspiring others due to her story given additional work in the wheelchair basketball community where she works tirelessly to provide opportunity for disabled athletes to compete and win in sport. Competing at the Commonwealth Games and winning a silver medal within just 9 months of starting the sport is a remarkable achievement. It shows Lou's natural talent, as well as her hard work and commitment to training. It's clear that Lou is not letting her recent injury hold her back. Her drive to get back to competing shows her resilience and determination to overcome setbacks. Lou is a great role model for anyone looking to take on new challenges and push themselves to achieve their goals. She shows the commitment required to excelling in multiple fields - whether it’s multiple sports or her accountancy. Her story demonstrates that with passion, dedication, and hard work, anything is possible.

Here are the people shortlisted for the Louis Martin Lifetime Achievement Award along with a summary of why people have nominated them:

Micky Yule - After an incredible sporting career Micky Yule has made the decision to retire from Para powerlifting. Micky was discovered during Gold4Glasgow talent search ahead of the 2014 Commonwealth Games and went on to compete at the highest level in his sport. Micky faced significant challenges but met them all with extraordinary determination. Finishing his career on a high his most recent achievements included a bronze medal in the men's 72 kg event at the 2020 Summer Paralympics in Tokyo, Japan. He followed this with another bronze in the men's heavyweight category at the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games.

Mike Pearman - Mike has been involved in the weightlifting community for a long time and has been both a competitor and coach. As a coach, Mike has played an important role in helping to develop the skills and abilities of weightlifters at both national and club level. He has helped to identify talented athletes and worked with them to improve their technique, strength, and overall performance. In particular, Mike's support of women's weightlifting is significant. Historically, weightlifting has been seen as a male-dominated sport, and women have often faced obstacles when trying to participate. By supporting and coaching the women's national team, Mike has helped to break down some of these barriers and promote gender equality in the sport.

Here are the people shortlisted for the Technical Official of the Year Award along with a summary of why people have nominated them:

Aaron Holt - Aaron is an outstanding member of the weightlifting community, both as a Masters Weightlifter and as a Technical Official. His commitment to improving as an official, supporting the sport, and promoting a good work ethic is truly admirable. His willingness to give his time to TO at all levels of BWL competition and events run by the Masters community is a testament to his passion and dedication to the sport. His encouragement of others to get involved in volunteering at events is also a positive influence on the weightlifting community.

Harj Cheema - Harj is always happy to help in any competition, from being a referee to helping out to make sure everything runs smoothly. Being a helpful and supportive presence can make a big difference in the success of a BWL event, and his willingness to lend a hand as a referee or in any other capacity is admirable and very much appreciated.

Holly Baker - Holly's commitment to volunteering at both the local and national level competitions is admirable, it demonstrates her willingness to give back to the weightlifting community and support others in achieving their goals.

Here are the people shortlisted for the S&F Flooring Masters Lifter of the Year Award along with a summary of why people have nominated them:

Andrew Seaber - Andrew won a gold medal at the 2023 World Masters Championship in Orlando, USA. A tremendous achievement alongside setting new World and British Masters records in age group and body weight.

Clare Dane - Clare is a truly inspiring athlete who has overcome significant challenges to achieve success in weightlifting. Clare has continued to push herself and develop her skills in the sport. Clare's dedication to weightlifting has led her to compete at both World and European masters events, and she is now developing into a national level senior lifter. Her commitment to the sport serves as an inspiration to others who may be facing similar challenges and shows that with hard work and determination, anything is possible.

Kelly Friel - Kelly won a gold medal at the 2023 World Masters Championship in Orlando and was named the best lifter in her age group. A remarkable accomplishment that requires a significant amount of hard work, dedication, and skill. As is setting new World Masters and British Masters records in her age group and body weight.

Samantha Travis - Samantha won a gold medal at the 2022 European Masters in Raszyn, Poland and was named the best in her age group. This is an impressive feat and a testament to her hard work and dedication. In addition to her individual accomplishments, setting new European and British Masters records in her age group and body weight is an incredible achievement.

Saun Trebillcock - Saun has been nominated for dedicating his life to lifting and for being outstanding! What an accolade!

Trish Tenn - Trish is an inspiration not only for masters women but also masters athletes in general. Proof that age is just a number!

Here are the people shortlisted for the Brian Hamill Unsung Hero of the Year Award along with a summary of why people have nominated them:

Adam Pugh and Chris Dallard - It's great to have coaches who are dedicated to helping their athletes reach their full potential and achieve their goals. The pair are very supportive and offer a nurturing environment for novice lifters and experienced athletes alike.

Jo Calvino - As the Weightlifting and Para Powerlifting Competition Manager at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games, Jo played a vital role in ensuring that the event was a success. Her hard work and dedication to creating a fantastic experience for both the lifters and the spectators clearly paid off. Jo brought the sport to life and made the event so exciting for everyone involved. The impressive Eleiko kit, the commentators and the DJ all added to the atmosphere and made the weightlifting hall a thrilling place to be. It no doubt inspired a future generation of weightlifters and para powerlifters.

Keith Morgan - Keith's dedication towards the Crystal Palace Weightlifting club is truly inspiring and the athletes he's helped over the years. His commitment to supporting lifters of all abilities is a testament to his passion for the sport and his desire to see others succeed. It's clear that Keith's contributions to the sport and his community are invaluable, and he serves as an excellent role model for aspiring coaches and athletes alike. His dedication and passion are truly admirable, and he is undoubtedly making a significant difference in the lives of those he helps.

Here are the people shortlisted for the John Lear Outstanding Contribution Award along with a summary of why people have nominated them:

Peter Larsen - Peter has dedicated his life to coaching weightlifting and continues to do so even at the age of 80. He has played a significant role in the journey of many current weightlifting athletes, including Jonothan Chin, Edmon Avetisyan, Finley Austin, and others. The fact that he still volunteers as a technical official and is well-known in the sport speaks to his commitment and the impact he has had on the weightlifting community.

Ray Williams - Ray is a dedicated and passionate coach who not only focuses on helping his weightlifters succeed at competitions, including the Commonwealth Games, but also strives to promote physical fitness and wellness in his local community. By being willing to coach anyone who wants to improve, regardless of their initial skill level, Ray is helping to create a supportive and inclusive environment where everyone has the opportunity to achieve their fitness goals. This approach can have a positive impact on individuals' physical and mental health, as well as foster a sense of community and camaraderie among participants. Ray's commitment to the sport of weightlifting is admirable and has had far-reaching benefits for both his local community and the sport of weightlifting as a whole.

Here are the people shortlisted for Volunteer of the Year along with a summary of why people have nominated them:

Gary Allen - Gary has had such a positive impact through coaching at weights and cakes. He is dedicated to bringing out the best in the kids and adults he works with, and that he goes above and beyond to provide the best possible training. He volunteers his time to coach youth sessions, drive the minibus to competitions, and attends all sessions at the gym, all while encouraging all the children. True hard work and dedication!

Gemma Harvey - Gemma is an individual who goes above and beyond to make a difference in her community, especially in supporting the growth and development of young people in weightlifting. She goes the extra mile as a volunteer helping to coach children, organising competitions, sorting accommodation, fundraising and attending competitions. Another example of true hard work and dedication.

Krys Campbell - Krys is an invaluable asset to the sports community! Her dedication to supporting technical officials, organizing workshops, and providing assistance with various competitions demonstrates a strong commitment to promoting and advancing the sport of weightlifting. Krys's contributions are sure to have a positive impact on both individual athletes and the sports community as a whole.

Here are the athletes shortlisted for SBD Young Para Powerlifter of the Year along with a summary of why people have nominated them:

Mark Swan - Mark Swan had a fantastic 2022 making it to the international podium twice. First at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games, where he secured a silver medal with a 202kg bench. Mark then went on to set a European record and bag a gold medal at the WPPO European Championships with a 200kg bench. 

Olivia Broome - Olivia Broome had a fantastic 2022 making it to the international podium twice this year. First at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games, where she secured a silver medal with a 111kg bench. Olivia then secured a second silver medal at the WPPO European Championships with a 115kg bench.

Matthew Harding - Matt Harding made it to the international podium in 2022 at the WPPO European Championships, where he secured a gold medal and a 5kg lead on competitors after a 179kg bench.

Here are the athletes shortlisted for SBD Young Weightlifter of the Year along with a summary of why people have nominated them:

Alice Aitchison - Alice Aitchison made it to the international podium at the 2022 EWF European Junior and Under 23 Championships when she achieved a bronze medal in the clean and jerk after successfully lifting 110kg in the 71kg category.

Asees Dhanda - Asees Dhanda made it to the international podium at the 2022 EWF European Youth Championships when she achieved a bronze medal in the snatch after successfully lifting 57kg in the 45kg category.

Bella Brown - Isabella is an incredibly dedicated and hardworking athlete who has made great strides in her weightlifting career. She has shown a strong passion for her sport and a commitment to constantly improving and pushing herself to new heights

Lucy McGonigle - Lucy McGonigle made it to the international podium in 2022 at the EWF European Youth and under 15 Championships, where she bagged a bronze medal after totalling 176kg.

Myren Madden - Myren is a fantastic young athlete. After a tough year in 2021 Myren showed a fantastic attitude to come back into form. He put a massive effort into key areas of his development and showed a fantastic attitude he can be very proud of to turn 2022 into a great year. He remains one of the best young male prospects in England and Britain after winning English and British age group Championships representing GB at the European Junior Championships and recording multiple British record winning performances.

Silver Ee - Dedication and hard work are essential qualities for any athlete, and Silver has truly gone above and beyond in pursuing his goals. Achieving success at the highest levels of any sport is a tremendous accomplishment, and it's clear that he has put in the effort and commitment to make it happen.

Stefano Cataldi - Stefano has shown extraordinary progress across 2022 breaking multiple British records, represented GB at the world Junior Championships and captured the highest ranked position of a junior British male lifter at the European Junior Championships in recent years. He has secured national medals at all major British English competitions over the last 12 months. Stefano continues to show why he is one of the best young prospects in British weightlifting and his future continues to look exciting.

Here are the athletes shortlisted for Sportscover Weightlifter of the Year along with a summary of why people have nominated them:

Catrin Jones - Catrin Jones made it to the international podium at the 2022 EWF European Junior and Under 23 Championships when she achieved a gold medal in the 55kg category after totalling 183kg.

Chris Murray - Chris Murray made it to the international podium twice in 2022. The first time was when he won gold at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games, making him the first English male weightlifter to secure gold in 20 years. Chris then secured silver at the EWF European Junior and Under 23 Championships in the 81kg category.

Emily Campbell - In 2022 Emily had another fantastic year! She retained her European title, won the Gold medal at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games and upgraded her 2021 World Championships bronze medal to a silver in Bogota.

Fraer Morrow - Fraer Morrow made it to the international podium in 2022 at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games, where she bagged a bronze medal after totalling 198kg.

Jess Gordan-Brown - Jess Gordon-Brown made it to the international podium in 2022 at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games, where she secured a silver medal after totalling 197kg.

Sarah Davies - Sarah Davies made it to the international podium in 2022 at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games, where she brought home a gold medal after totalling 229kg.

Here are the athletes shortlisted for Sportscover Para Powerlifter of the Year along with a summary of why people have nominated them:

Mark Swan - Mark Swan had a fantastic 2022 making it to the international podium twice. First at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games, where he secured a silver medal with a 202kg bench. Mark then went on to set a European record and bag a gold medal at the WPPO European Championships with a 200kg bench.

Zoe Newson - Zoe Newson had a fantastic 2022 making it to the international podium twice. First at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games, where she secured a gold medal with a 101kg bench, the first ever para powerlifting gold for Team England at a Commonwealth Games and the only one Nigeria have never secured. Zoe then secured a second gold medal at the WPPO European Championships with a 100kg bench.
