Team Announcement: 2024 IWF World Championships

The event, set to take place from 6 to 15 December, marks the first time Bahrain will host a Weightlifting World Championships.

The British squad features some familiar names, including 2x Olympic medallist, Commonwealth and European Champion Emily Campbell, Olympian and Commonwealth Games gold medallist Sarah Davies. Joining them Zoe Smith, Olympian, Commonwealth Games gold medallist and three-time European bronze medallist, as well as Jess Gordon-Brown, a Commonwealth Games medallist. The squad includes Andrew Griffiths and Erin Barton British Champions and record holders.

BWL is also proud to welcome two newcomers to the World Senior Team. Isabella Brown - European Junior Bronze medallist - has earned her spot after adding an impressive 15kg to her best lifts since November. Olympic bronze medallist from London 2012, Madias Dodo Nzesso Ngake, has become eligible to represent Great Britain following her victory at the British Championships in July. Dave Sawyer, National Coach, commented:

"It gives me great pleasure that we have selected a strong team to compete at the World Championships in Bahrain 2024. All athletes achieved the high qualification standard required, which is a testament to their commitment to the sport and showcases the quality of the team. We welcome debutants to the senior team, junior athlete Isabella Brown in the 76kg category and Madias Dodo Nzesso Ngake in the 87kg category. On behalf of the performance team, we wish you all the very best in the competition."

While the team is a force to be reckoned with, Head of Performance Stuart Martin acknowledged that several familiar faces will be absent this year. Athletes who are recovering from injuries sustained during the intense Paris 2024 qualification process are taking the time needed to heal. Martin commented: "The end of an Olympic cycle is a crucial time for athletes to recalibrate both physically and mentally. It's essential they are healthy for the challenges ahead. We fully support their decision to lay strong foundations for the future and wish them the best as they prepare for their return to the platform in 2025."

With a stellar lineup and an unwavering commitment to success, BWL is ready to make its mark at the IWF World Championships. Stay tuned for updates and follow our athletes as they embark on this exciting journey. We wish the entire team the best of luck and look forward to seeing them perform at their very best!
