Rupinder Ashworth Appointed as BWL Independent Chair

As the first-ever female BWL Chair, Rupinder Ashworth brings to the role a wealth of experience in sports governance, business leadership, and marketing and is widely respected for her commitment to integrity, inclusion, and high-performance culture. First appointed as an Independent Director in December 2018, and then Senior Independent Director in July 2024, Ashworth will serve as BWL Independent Chair for four years, as per BWL Articles.

Her appointment follows a rigorous and transparent recruitment process led by the BWL Independent Nominations Committee including the presence of UKS Interim Chair Rachel Baillache during the interviews of short-listed candidates.

Speaking on the appointment, Rupinder Ashworth said:

"It is a tremendous honour to be appointed as the BWL Independent Chair. This is an organisation with proud traditions, ambitious goals, and a passionate community. I look forward to continuing working with the Board, executive team, and wider stakeholders to support the continued growth and success of the sport at all levels."

Matthew Curtain, BWL CEO commented:

"We are delighted to welcome Rupinder Ashworth to the role of Independent Chair. Her insight and leadership will be instrumental as we deliver our strategic vision and work to ensure weightlifting and para powerlifting in the UK is strong, inclusive, and future-focussed.
