Para Powerlifting Squad for Paris 2024 Paralympic Games
We are thrilled to announce that seven outstanding Para powerlifters have been selected to represent Great Britain at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games.
This team includes four debutants who will compete on the world’s biggest stage in just over a month.
Louise Sugden secured a bronze medal at Tokyo 2020 with her final lift. The 40-year-old, who also represented Great Britain in wheelchair basketball at Beijing 2008 and London 2012, will compete in the women’s up to 79kg class in Paris. Sugden shared her excitement: “I’m delighted to be selected for my fourth Paralympic Games. This one is extra special after shoulder surgery in 2022. I’ve worked incredibly hard to return to full strength and can’t wait to represent Great Britain in Paris.”
Olivia Broome, another bronze medallist from Tokyo 2020, will compete in the women’s up to 50kg class. At just 23 years old, she heads to Paris as the reigning world champion.
Zoe Newson, a two-time Paralympic bronze medallist, will compete in the women’s up to 45kg class. Newson, who debuted at London 2012, added another bronze to her collection at last year’s World Championships and won gold at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games.
Joining them are debutants Charlotte McGuiness (women’s up to 55kg), who won silver at the 2021 World Junior Championships, Mark Swan (men’s up to 65kg), the reigning European champion and Commonwealth silver medallist, Mattie Harding (men’s up to 80kg), the 2022 European champion, and Liam McGarry (men’s over 107kg), who secured his place in Paris by benching 232kg despite recent illness.
McGarry expressed his pride: “Seven years after my spinal cord injury, I have qualified for the Paralympic Games in Paris. Competing on this global stage against the world’s strongest men fills me with profound pride and accomplishment. My journey is proof that you’re never out of the fight.”
Tom Whittaker, Para Powerlifting Performance Director, said: “I am thrilled to announce this inspirational team for Paris 2024. Each athlete has shown exceptional dedication and resilience. I am confident they will deliver outstanding performances at the Games.”
Penny Briscoe, ParalympicsGB Chef de Mission, added: “Our Para powerlifting squad embodies the spirit of strength and determination. I can’t wait to see their achievements at the Paralympic Games next month.”
