Outstanding Achievement at Oldbury Academy

Today as part of the Great British Week of Sport we are focussing on getting young people involved as part of the #BeActive Campaign.

We are sharing youth coaching success stories from all-around the British weightlifting community, and next up we are showcasing Oldbury Academy who are based in Birmingham.

Outstanding Achievement at Oldbury Academy

Oldbury Academy have been influential in youth development by hosting national age group events which attract aspiring athletes from all across the county.

Sessions at the school are run by Sam Hayer who represented England as an athlete at the Commonwealth Games. He was also charge of the Field of Play at the London 2012 Olympics.

Below Sam shares his insight into on how the junior programmes are integrated at Oldbury via his own gym delivery.

"Sport promotes a positive attitude and the benefits that physical activity brings to our younger generation. Here at Oldbury Academy and Sam’s gym we engage in various activities ranging from Olympic Lifting to street dance classes. Oldbury Academy P.E department work very closely with Sam’s gym by delivering P.E lessons to Year 7 - 11 pupils to set them up on the benefits that exercise brings.

We pride ourselves on working not only with sport minded pupils but on our passion and commitment to reach out to the ones who lack self-esteem and confidence in physical activity. This is clear evidence as we see ex pupils joining up to the gym once they have left school due to the confidence they develop and the enjoyment they get whilst training in the gym during school P.E lessons.

Our Junior Wellbeing Programme is extremely popular with the local schools where pupils from  the surrounding area are attending the gym after school. This is a fantastic way to build up their confidence through knowledge & healthy eating, giving them an understanding of the types of exercise with the importance of programmes.

Oldbury Academy is very proud of its Community programme and gives a wide range of sporting options, including Basketball, Five a side football and Martial Arts. This programme provides young people with the opportunity to socialise with others, improve their fitness, develop their knowledge and understanding of a healthy lifestyle all in a safe and engaging environment".
