National Sikh Sports Awards Honour Gian Singh Cheema with Lifetime Achievement Award

BWL is delighted to congratulate Gian Singh Cheema on receiving the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2026 National Sikh Sports Awards, held on 4 July 2026 at Allianz Stadium, Twickenham, in front of an audience of more than 500 guests from across sport, business and the Sikh community.

The award recognises more than five decades of exceptional service to weightlifting and the Sikh community. 

Representing India, Gian won a bronze medal at the 1982 Asian Games in New Delhi, establishing himself as one of the country's leading weightlifters. After moving to the United Kingdom, he built an outstanding coaching career, including coaching at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens and three Commonwealth Games, while dedicating more than 35 years to developing athletes and strengthening Warley Weightlifting Club. 

Beyond his achievements in elite sport, Gian has devoted his life to helping others. Through decades of coaching, mentoring and volunteering, he has inspired generations of athletes, supported countless young people, and used weightlifting to promote confidence, discipline, inclusion and community spirit.  

The award was presented by BWL Chair Rupinder Ashworth and CEO Matthew Curtain, who paid tribute to Gian's extraordinary contribution to the sport and the wider community.
