Coronavirus: The new rules on groups

Following yesterday’s government announcement we understand the news of changes to group sizes may have caused confusion and generated queries.

Coronavirus: The new rules on groups

Sport England have sought clarity on what this means for sport and physical activity, and while social gatherings of more than six people will be banned in England from 14 September, the government has confirmed that organised sports and activities that have been through return to play protocols can continue, as can organised outdoor sports and physical activity events such as parkrun, which is due to return next month.

People can also continue to use leisure facilities, including gyms and pools - classes within these venues can continue as they are now. People should not go to these venues socially in groups of more than six.

That's because these sports and activities have stringent plans in place to reduce the risk of Covid-19, and because these venues are classed as Covid-secure given the measures they’ve introduced.

British Weight Lifting are still exploring the impact on competitions and awaiting further Government clarity which we will share as soon as we receive guidance.

Ashley Metcalfe, CEO for British Weight Lifting commented “We’re are really pleased to hear that our clubs in England can continue to operate as they have been doing since they opened on the 25 July. British Weight Lifting Clubs have worked hard to get their members back to training, while ensuring the safety and well-being of anyone that visits. It is positive that the government have recognised the hard work and plans that have been put in place to reduce the risk of Covid-19”.

Further Sport England information can be found through the following links, on Return to Play and our frequently asked questions.

Alternatively the British Weight Lifting link to ‘Considerations to make before returning to training’ can be found here

Please note that the above rules only apply to England. More information on guidance can be found for Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales.
