We are thrilled to announce that this year’s British Open will be held in conjunction with the annual Lift Me Up charity competition on 31 August 2024.
This unique event, hosted at Winners 2000 Gym in Newton Abbot, Devon, promises to be the largest charity weightlifting event in the country, with 120 spots available for athletes of all ages and abilities.
About Lift Me Up
Lift Me Up was established in 2021 by Emily Muskett, inspired by her personal loss of her mother to Motor Neurone Disease (MND) just before the Tokyo Olympics. MND is a devastating illness that attacks the nerves controlling muscles, leading to severe physical decline and ultimately death. With no effective treatment or cure currently available, all funds raised through Lift Me Up go directly to vital research efforts spearheaded by the Motor Neurone Disease Association (MNDA).
A Family-Friendly Event
This year's event promises not only competitive excitement but also a family-friendly atmosphere. Activities such as face painting and a bouncy castle will be available, ensuring a fun day out for the whole family. The competition will follow the Sinclair system, with a variety of prizes to be won. Sponsors for the event will be announced soon.
Emily Muskett shared her excitement about the upcoming event: “I am absolutely delighted to announce that the annual Lift Me Up charity competition will run as a combined event with the British Open this year. Lift Me Up has raised over £32,000 for the Motor Neurone Disease Association since 2021, where funds go towards vital research. Having lost my Mum to MND in the build-up to the Tokyo Olympics, I have seen first-hand just how important these donations are towards those suffering from the illness, their families, and the ongoing search for a cure.
The British Open x Lift Me Up event is going to be the largest charity weightlifting event in the country, with 120 places available for athletes of all ages and abilities across two competition platforms.
This event is very close to my heart and I want to say a big thank you to British Weight Lifting for their ongoing support, and to Winners 2000 for hosting the competition each year. I look forward to seeing the incredible British weightlifting community coming together for what is set to be the most successful Lift Me Up event yet.”
