BWL Statement - Sonny Webster
British Weight Lifting's statement regarding Sonny Webster.
British Weight Lifting (BWL) confirms that its International Weightlifter Sonny Webster has been suspended from all sport for four years following an Anti-Doping Rule Violation under Article 2.1 of the ADR. The suspension is in place from 14 June 2017 until midnight on 13 June 2021.
Both Webster’s A and B samples tested positive for the prohibited substance, Ostarine following an out of competition test on 23 May 2017.
British Weight Lifting works with the IWF (International Weightlifting Federation), the IPC (International Paralympic Committee), WADA (World Anti-Doping Agency) and UKAD (UK Anti-Doping) in the fight against doping, and conducts a full anti-doping programme covering the three important areas of education, testing (both in and out of competition) and results management. The NGB has a zero tolerance approach to the use of any prohibited substance and firmly advocates clean sport.
BWL’s Chief Executive, Ashley Metcalfe added: “Whilst it is hugely disappointing that a British Olympic Weightlifter has been found to have taken a prohibited substance we will continue to test, educate and work with all our lifters, whilst supporting our International Federation to promote and provide a clean sport. This out of competition test and suspension demonstrates that there is no place to hide for lifters who have been found to have taken a prohibited substance.”
