The IWF delegation – led by IWF General Secretary José Quiñones and BWL CEO Matthew Curtain were welcomed with traditional cultural performances, including a dragon dance and the beating of a xinchang drum, reflecting the region’s deep cultural and sporting roots.

During the visit, Matthew Curtain presented the museum with a framed British team singlet worn at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, signed by leading British athletes. This donation highlights Great Britain’s longstanding contribution to the sport and demonstrates BWL’s commitment to sharing its heritage with the global weightlifting community.

José Quiñones also donated a Colombian team costume signed by Olympian Luis Mosquera and silver medallist Yeison Lopez, as well as an ITO uniform jacket from the 2025 IWF World Junior & Youth Championships in Lima.

Speaking at the event, Matthew Curtain said he was honoured to represent BWL and emphasised the importance of international collaboration in safeguarding weightlifting’s rich history. The visit further strengthened the relationship between the IWF, BWL and the global weightlifting community.

BWL looks forward to continuing its support for initiatives that preserve and promote the sport’s heritage, ensuring that the achievements, stories and culture of weightlifting remain accessible to all.
