Updated Gender Identity Statement

British Weight Lifting (BWL) has published an updated Gender Identity Statement following a review of its current policy.

Updated Gender Identity Statement

The update confirms that the female competition category remains for athletes whose biological sex is female at birth, in line with UK law and the need to ensure fair and safe competition.

The statement also clarifies that trans men (athletes assigned female at birth) are eligible to compete in the male category, subject to standard anti-doping requirements.
BWL remains committed to creating an inclusive and respectful environment for everyone in the sport. While competition categories must meet legal and fairness requirements, members’ gender identity will continue to be recognised and respected in all non-competitive aspects of weightlifting.

As the national governing body, BWL will continue to ensure its policies are clear, proportionate and support both the integrity of competition and a welcoming community for all.
