Updated BWL Coach Licence Standards and Requirements

What’s changing?

From 1 July 2024 all licenced weightlifting coaches will require Safeguarding and Protecting Children training, and for this to be updated every 3 years.

Updated BWL Coach Licence Standards and Requirements

Why is this change being made?

“Safeguarding training provides you with guidance and scenarios to prompt you to reflect on what it means to be a child today, and to consider the impact and implications on your coaching practice”.

We’re making this change to ensure that weightlifting continues to meet the necessary standards in sport, recommended by the NSPCC’s Child Protection in Sport Unit.

All national governing bodies that seek public funding are held to account by the UK’s Code for Sports Governance. The purpose of the code is to bring greater accountability and integrity to sport. It’s considered a minimum standard in all sports, not just weightlifting, that coaches have up to date safeguarding training.

How can I undertake Safeguarding training?

Completing UK Coaching’s 3 hour ‘Safeguarding & Protecting Children (Online Classroom)’ course is the easiest way to get trained as courses are widely available.

How much does it cost?

From February to June 2024 Safeguarding courses provided by UK Coaching will be available to BWL members at a special price of £28 (usual price £38).

How do I book onto a course?

Courses are available to book onto weekly starting in February and places are available on a first come first served basis, so please don’t leave it to the last minute to find a course. These courses are only open to BWL members.

Update your profile

How do I evidence Safeguarding training from UK Coaching?

UK Coaching will send you a certificate after you complete the course. You’ll need to upload the certificate to your member profile on BWL’s platform (Sport:80). This will be checked and approved by BWL and your coach licence will automatically be updated.

What other safeguarding training is accepted?

If you’ve already attended a safeguarding course within the last 3 years, it may be accepted. Please upload the certificate of completion to your member profile. As a minimum it should be a 3-hour safeguarding course that’s interactive, e-learning courses are not accepted.
