Tom Whittaker, Paralympic Performance Director

"British Weight Lifting have selected the largest team in recent years, reflecting the growth in the number of talented athletes developing within the UK and the home-based opportunity to give more athletes international experience.

There is a fantastic mixture of experience, youth, world class talent and emerging talent to enjoy over the 4 days of competition.

The event will enable a number of Tokyo hopefuls within the team to complete the eligibility pathway for the Tokyo 2020 games as they prepare for the final qualifier in Dubai next April.

There is a number of exciting Tokyo hopefuls to look out for; former world record holder and Paralympic silver medallist from Rio 2016, Ali Jawad and two-time Paralympic Medal winner Zoe Newson.

A number will be making their international debut such as Liam McGarry and Kim Dean, both have made great progress domestically and are well deserving of the opportunity along with the rest of the team".

 Ashley Metcalfe, BWL CEO

"British Weight Lifting is absolutely delighted with the team that has been announced today. Our squad features the perfect combination of experience and new exciting talent, showcasing the continued development of the sport domestically.

We would like to thank our partners UK Sport, and Manchester City Council for giving our exceptional athletes an opportunity to showcase their skills on home soil ahead of Tokyo 2020. We look forward to cheering the team on in February and can’t wait to see them in action".
