Leeds United CEO, Angus Kinnear Appointed New Chair of British Weight Lifting

Fresh from a successful season, which saw Leeds narrowly miss out on promotion to the Premier League, Angus brings a wealth of sporting, marketing and commercial expertise and an understanding of both professional, Olympic and Paralympic sport to the organisation.  He has worked within the broader sport sector including being on the Board of Commonwealth Games England for a five-year period.  Angus is a graduate from the London School of Economics and is the current CEO of Leeds United, whilst previously holding senior leadership roles at West Ham, Arsenal, Coca-Cola and Proctor and Gamble.

Angus replaces Peter Rowley OBE who completed a five-year tenure and recent interim Chair Patrick Roberts.

Ashley Metcalfe, CEO of BWL commented:

“It is a real coup for BWL to attract an individual with the sporting and commercial expertise that Angus offers. It is a really exciting time to be involved with British Weight Lifting – on the back of recent European and Commonwealth Games successes, our elite lifters and para-powerlifters continue to impress, whilst the sport continues to grow and engage a much broader and more diverse customer base. I am sure that Angus’s new perspective and his significant understanding of professional, Olympic and Paralympic sport will be a huge benefit to us.  His vision for the future of BWL is exciting and I look forward to working with him to continuing to grow our organisation and help make more communities fitter, healthier and stronger.

“I would like to wish him every success and also thank his predecessors, Peter Rowley OBE and our recent Interim Chair Patrick Roberts for their outstanding contributions in ensuring BWL continues to remain fully Governance compliant, financially sound and achieving its strategic and operational targets.”

In response, the new Independent Chair, Angus Kinnear added:

“I can see real potential for weightlifting and feel the opportunities to help BWL continually reshape and develop domestically and Internationally are enormous. It is a privilege to accept this position as I am a passionate advocate of increasing sporting opportunities for all.  With Tokyo and Birmingham around the corner, I look forward to leading the Board and driving forward BWL’s strategic ambitions to deliver greater success on and off the platform.”
