• Initial period of 2 years subject to an annual review by the Chair.

BWL Vacancy: Non-Executive Director – Athlete Experience

An exciting opportunity exists to shape the continuing growth and development of British Weight Lifting, the national governing body for the sports of Olympic Weight Lifting and Para-Powerlifting. The British Weight Lifting Non-Executive Director with Athlete Experience shall actively lead in providing an effective platform where the views of lifters are represented, and the voice of athletes can be heard by advising the board on matters concerning British Weight Lifting.

The role of the Board is to ensure that the vision for Weight Lifting and Para-Powerlifting and corporate objectives are achieved, that the expectations of all stakeholders are fulfilled and a sound financial position is maintained. The successful candidate will be able to contribute to the strategic leadership of British Weight Lifting, equipped with the skills and knowledge to meet the challenges and opportunities faced by the sport that has over the last 5 years become increasingly diverse in terms of participation and witnessed increasing national and international female and para-powerlifting success.

Comfortable working alongside a mix of staff and volunteers, the candidate should be an Olympic Weightlifter or Para Powerlifter who has competed at Great Britain or International level and must be a current or recently retired athlete.

The successful candidate should be able to demonstrate a good understanding of the UK’s sporting landscape and the role that sport plays in society; the ability to consider complex issues related to evaluating strategic performance, think creatively and strategically; the skills to challenge current thinking at Board level and present views in a clear and concise manner; with a clear commitment to improving diversity and equality and understanding the needs of under-represented groups in sport.

It is anticipated that the successful applicant will be invited to join sub-committees of the Board following induction.

The appointment will be for an initial period of 2 years subject to an annual review by the Chair. BWL’s offices are based in Leeds however much of the work can be conducted from home. The role involves attending 5 board meetings per annum, sub-committee meetings and the Annual General Meeting.

It will require a time commitment of up to 12 days per annum, for which reasonable subsistence and travel expenses incurred are payable.
