Become a Birmingham legacy club
This year Birmingham and the West Midlands will host the 2022 Commonwealth Games. Athletes from 54 Commonwealth Countries and 18 overseas territories will come together to compete during August and inspire the British public and the citizens of the Commonwealth to get active.
British Weight Lifting (BWL) want to capture this opportunity and support the growth of the sport and health of the people in the West Midlands. Sport England have recently awarded BWL a grant to support various projects which have the potential to create a legacy from the Birmingham 2022 Games. We are looking to identify up to 5 weightlifting clubs based in the West Midlands who are passionate and committed to working closely with British Weight Lifting over the next 18 months.
Together we hope to create and deliver opportunities which attract a broader and more diverse range of participants to the sport of weightlifting and help people across the West Midlands understand more about the health benefits of strength training.
If you are a club in the West midlands who would be interested in supporting BWL’s legacy project please complete the following application form no later than 3 July 2022. Clubs will be informed if they are successful on 6 July 2022.
Successful clubs will be expected to work closely with BWL throughout July to confirm that they have the appropriate policies and procedures in place to ensure the safety of their members and provide an inclusive environment for people from all backgrounds who wish to get involved in the sport. Clubs will be expected to work closely with BWL to support Games time activations at the NEC and agree to provide a series of sessions at their clubs for new participants to ‘come & try’ weightlifting and strength training throughout August & September.
BWL will continue to support the development of these clubs and help them to continuously grow and positively impact their communities over the next 18 months. This will include support to improve a club’s governance, facilities and access to professional development opportunities for their coaches & volunteers.
