At British Weight Lifting we have created the Instructing pathway to equip sports, health and fitness professionals with the tools to instruct weight lifting/training to the highest standards. Using the core techniques and skills taught as part of this course, you will be able to instruct weight lifting/training sessions that can be used to improve strength, core stability, coordination and balance within all types of sport and physical activity.

Our exclusive courses will introduce you to the official British Weight Lifting Technical Models to ensure you instruct weight training safely, effectively and to your clients potential. We work in partnership with Focus Awards (regulated awarding body) to accredit our qualifications.

Independent Weight Training Instructor 

  • Certification: Level 2 Award in Instructing Weight Training
  • Length of course: 4 – 8 hours E-learning / 2 day practical session / Completion of linked and progressive sessions

The Level 2 Award in Instructing Weight Training is designed for those who are wanting to improve their knowledge and skills within the specific area of weight training. The course will teach you the technical aspects of how to instruct both the Snatch and Clean & Jerk as well as a variety of training lifts.

The Course 

The content of this course has been designed for people who have some experience of weight training exercises. The course will teach you how to deliver these exercises within an instructing environment.

Modules include:

  • Roles and responsibilities of an instructor including safeguarding
  • Safety in the gym
  • Principles of training including anatomy and physiology; nutrition and health & safety
  • The lifts – key positions for the snatch; the clean; the split jerk; front squat; back squat; dead lift; stiff leg dead lift; reverse lunge; press; bench press and bent over row
  • Planning a session for an individual and a group

Course Prerequisites

  • Entry level course
  • Be at least 16 years of age
  • Have a minimum of one year experience in participation in weight lifting activities
  • Be able to communicate effectively in English

What Will I Be Qualified To Do?

Upon successful completion of this course you will be able to; plan sessions containing weight training specific techniques, instruct exercise sessions with a strong technical knowledge of weight training exercises, enhance your skills and knowledge as an instructor and finally begin your journey on the weight lifting education pathway.

Advanced Weight Training Instructor 

  • Certification: Level 3 Certificate in Instructing Weight Training
  • Length of course: 8 – 12 hours E-learning / 2 day practical session / Completion of profiling, programming and delivery away from course

The Level 3 Certificate in Instructing Weight Training is for instructors/ personal trainers who have experience of delivering independent sessions to groups and individuals. The certificate enables you to independently create, deliver and reflect on year long programmes, whilst monitoring and adapting sessions/plans as required for groups and individual clients. The course will cover further principles and aspects to a clients development across all areas. This course will teach and then test your knowledge and skills as an advanced Weight Training Instructor.

The Course 

The course consists of two parts: the first part comprising of online modules that require successful completion and passing by all learners, and the second part requiring 2 days of practical delivery and assessments. Following the successful attendance and passing of these elements you will then become a British Weight Lifting qualified Level 3 Weight Training Instructor.

Modules include:

  • Roles and responsibilities of a weight training instructor
  • Anatomy and physiology
  • Biomechanical concepts associated with weight training
  • Adaptations for training
  • Programming
  • Periodisation and a breakdown of the elements associated with it
  • Profiling and its use when designing programmes for your clients
  • Monitoring and adapting session
  • Nutrition
  • The lifts – Snatch; Clean & Jerk including derivatives and variations
  • Further lifts including squats; deadlifts; good mornings; presses; lunges; bench press; rows; bicep curl; skull crusher; lateral raise; pec/prone fly; using barbells and dumbbells
  • Assessment including client profiling; weight training risk assessments and training session planner

Course Prerequisites

  • Entry level course for Personal Trainers
  • Have completed one of the following qualifications: BWL Level 2 Award in Instructing Weight Lifting, a Level 3 Personal Trainer qualification or equivalent as recognised by BWL
  • Be at least 18 years of age on the first day of the course
  • Have some experience of the lifts and weight training
  • Be able to communicate effectively in English

What Will I Be Qualified To Do?

Following the successful completion of this course you will be able to work as a highly qualified Instructor within Weight Training. Once you have attended and successfully passed the award as a qualified Level 3 Instructor you will be eligible to progress further on our education pathway by meeting the requirements to move onto our Level 3 Certificate in Coaching Weight Lifting.
