British Weight Lifting has taken the decision to transfer all the remaining Regional Open Series events in the 2020 calendar year to online competitions.  This means that the Regional Open Series will take place without the risk of cancellation due to Covid-19 or other causes.

Each of the three Series will resume from the point they left when events were cancelled earlier this year.  Full details of each Series can be found below.

The virtual Regional Open Series competitions will be eligible for rankings and qualification totals but will not be eligible for records.

BWL members are encouraged to trial using the virtual entry system by taking part in one of the free Lockdown Lift Off competitions to avoid any technical issues when entering a virtual Regional Open Series.

With no date set for the return to physical competition the transition into the Virtual Regional Open Series will provide lifters across the UK with the opportunity to compete purposefully for the first time since March.

The competition will be judged by Licensed Technical Officials to ensure a high standard of officiating and integrity. The Virtual Regional Open Series will remain a members-only competition.

All lifts will be included in the BWL ranking lists to help provide a source of motivation and point of reference for performance for athletes and coaches.  Totals will also be eligible for qualification to future events, notwithstanding the uncertain date for returning to physical competitions and the publication of the official National Qualification Totals for 2021.

The first round of Regional Open Series to take place virtually will open on 01 September at 0900 and submission will close on 04 October at 1700.

Entry, Scoring and Results

The minimum age to compete is 13 or older on 31 December 2020.  There is no maximum age to compete.

Although all results from the Regional Open Series are eligible for ranking and qualification, the Series itself is not scored on Total.  It is scored on Sinclair points; the Series winner is the male and female lifter in each age group with the highest combined Sinclair score after the Series final event (SMF score for Masters).  As there are no longer four competitions, there is no longer a requirement to compete in 3 out of 4 Series events.  Instead every result for a lifter will contribute to their final score.

Medals will be posted to the top 3 lifters in each age group for each round of the Series competition.

Sinclair (or SMF) points cannot be transferred between the Series’, for example a lifter cannot combine points from a North Series and South Series event.  Instead this would show that they had one score in the North and one score in the South.

Technical Rules and Exceptions

The BWL Open Series follows the BWL TCRR except for rules:

  • 1.9 Category Changes

At the BWL Open Series athletes are not required to make a specific bodyweight in order to compete.  Whilst the category the lifter competes in is applied for qualification and rankings it is not a requirement to weigh within this category to compete in the Open Series.

Athletes will be categorised according the weight shown on the scales in the weigh in video

  • 8 Classification of Lifters and Teams

The BWL Open Series will be scored according to the criteria above.

  • Weigh in

Further guidance will be published about how to conduct a weigh in for a virtual submission to ensure a fair and level playing field.
