The role of the Board is to ensure that the vision for Weight Lifting and Para-Powerlifting and corporate objectives are achieved, that the expectations of all stakeholders are fulfilled and a sound financial position is maintained. Successful candidates will be able to contribute to the strategic leadership of British Weight Lifting, equipped with the skills and knowledge to meet the challenges and opportunities faced by the sport that has over the last 5 years become increasingly diverse in terms of participation and witnessed increasing national and international female and para-powerlifting success. Comfortable working at a strategic level alongside a mix of staff and volunteers, candidates require knowledge or experience of one or more of community grassroots sport development, finance, human relations, marketing or public relations.

Additionally, successful candidates will be able to demonstrate success in a senior role in the private, public and/or voluntary sectors; an understanding of the role of an Independent or non-executive director in promoting good governance; a good understanding of the UK’s sporting landscape and the role that sport plays in society; the ability to consider complex issues related to evaluating strategic performance, think creatively and strategically; the skills to challenge current thinking at Board level and present views in a clear and concise manner; and a clear commitment to improving diversity and equality and understanding the needs of under-represented groups in sport.

It is anticipated that successful applicant will be invited to join sub-committees of the Board following induction.

BWL would particularly welcome applications from individuals with experience and expertise in Marketing and Corporate Communications, Elite Sport and Finance and Accounting. Appointments will be for initial terms of 4 years, with the possibility of reappointment for a second term. BWL’s offices are based at Leeds and Loughborough and much of the work can be conducted from home. The role involves attending 5 board meetings per annum, sub-committee meetings and the Annual General Meeting.

It will require a time commitment of up to 12 days per annum, for which reasonable subsistence and travel expenses incurred are payable. British Weight Lifting is an equal opportunities employer committed to addressing equality and diversity issues and understanding the needs of under-represented groups in sport. We are keen to achieve a more diverse Board of Directors and particularly welcome applications from members of under-represented groups.
